SUSTAINABILITY

The world is currently facing unprecedented crises and social issues that extend across a number of fields,
including environmental issues related to global warming, employment, education and welfare.
We at the TAIKO Group are embracing sustainable practices to help tackle and address these issues.

We are actively engaged in sustainability from
a variety of aspects in our business activities.

There are 17 goals and 169 targets outlined in the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) promoted by the UN and set to be achieved by 2030. The TAIKO Group agrees with this and feels a strong sense of duty as an entity that carries out business globally. We hope to do our part in addressing the environmental and social problems that the world faces.
We offer environmentally-friendly products and services for a wide range of industries. In addition, we shall do our part to help the communities where our offices and factories are. We shall also create a governance system for compliance as well as safety control. The TAIKO Group shall continue to be actively engaged in sustainability from a variety of aspects in our business activities.

Environment

EDevelopment and manufacture of environmentally-friendly products

In the marine industry, we develop and manufacture products, such as a “SCR system urea transfer pump” that complies with Tier III NOx controls and regulations, and a “Bilge discharge monitoring device” that monitors the oil concentration level in the discharged water and prevents the discharge of the oil-contaminated water from vessels. Other products include a “Bilge separator” and “Sewage treatment device” which prevent marine pollution. In factories and plants, we develop and manufacture products, such as a “Dry vacuum pump” with low noise levels, minimal vibration and long-lasting life thanks to the unique screw design that was developed in-house and its low speed operation. Other products include our “Award* winning TBS series” rotary blowers featuring excellent energy-savings (*Director General’s Award for Small and Medium Enterprise Agencies at Energy Conservation Grand Prize Competition in 2020). In addition, we also develop and manufacture products that support oil and gas, such as LNG (liquefied natural gas) and ammonia based fuel.
Furthermore, as the demand for more environmentally-friendly EVs increases, CHUGOKU ELECTRIC SERVICE, a company in the TAIKO Group, has developed Japan’s first EV charging station for marine vessels called “Eco Marine.” This product is specifically for car ferries, and the station is designed to charge EVs on the deck of marine vessels while they are underway at sea.

EInitiatives integrated at each location for energy-savings, cutting CO2 emissions and protecting local resources

Initiatives to cut greenhouse emissions is a critical issue that must be addressed by companies and countries throughout the world. We at the TAIKO Group are no exception to this. The following are specific initiatives adopted by the TAIKO Group.
Understand and cut energy use in accordance with the “Energy-Savings Law: Act on Rationalizing Energy Use”
Understand and cut CO2 emissions in accordance with the “Global Warming Law: Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures”
Control the release of chemical substances in accordance with the “Chemical Control Law: Act on the Assessment of Releases of Specified Chemical Substances in the Environment and the Promotion of Management Improvement”
Cut industrial waste and increase recycling in accordance with the “Waste Cleansing Law: Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act”
In accordance with these acts, we report on our respective usage and any related items to the prefectures and the government.

Our factories and plants at each TAIKO Group company are adopting energy-savings and CO2 cutting initiatives.

Alveopora japonica (corral - picture on right) is likened to the “Bouquet of the sea” and the largest colony in Japan is found near Okikamuro island. The Setonaikai National Park was designated a marine park area for the first time in February 2013. However, it was discovered in October 2020 that a large scale of alveopora japonica had died. The Ministry of the Environment is currently investigating the cause of its demise. TAIKO KIKAI INDUSTRIES is also working alongside the National Institute of Technology, Oshima College to help collect and investigate the concentration and distribution of microplastics, which are primarily styrofoam beads that float on the surface. EHydro and renewable energy

In the hydro and renewable energy field, we develop and operate “Small hydropower generation systems” by converting centrifugal pumps to power generation turbines, which are used in dams and water facilities. We also offer “Photovoltaic power generation (Power generated/supplied: Approx. 3 million kWh per year)” that is installed on company-owned land. In addition, we develop and manufacture products, such as “Electromagnetically driven diaphragm blowers” that offer an energy-saving and completely oil-free design, used for supplying air to algal biofuel plants and wastewater treatment facilities. SANYO ENGINEERING also works in “Offshore wind power system design” and “Photovoltaics/Solar thermal power system design.”

Governance

GCompliance/BCP

Governance is the foundation that enables a business to continue. The TAIKO Group is engaged in a number of governance measures, focusing on compliance and risk control.

Example:
We ensure that our employees are informed about Security Export Control and are in full compliance with the “Foreign Exchange Law: Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act.”
We ensure that our employees are informed about safety and health management, take steps to prevent industry related injuries or contracting diseases and are in full compliance with the “Labor Standards Act” and “Industrial Safety and Health Act.”

On another front, we established a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) in 2015 and have been updating it sequentially ever since. This plan sets forth measures in the event of a large scale disaster or accident, ensuring the continuity of the business and fulfilling our social responsibility as a global company.
